Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

We have an opening for a Senior CAD Technician to support our expanding transportation work. This position can be based in any of our five New York offices: Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, or Albany. While remote work may be considered, priority will be given to candidates who can work from our office. Preference will also be given to those residing in the Northeast. All candidates must be in the United States and sponsorship is not available. to be considered. We are seeking a candidate with a broad range of Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer as well as Autodesk AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience, with a strong focus on highway design, civil site design and an intermediate understanding of bridge design, right-of-way (ROW) surveying, and hydrographic survey practices.

What you will be able to do:

  • Lead CAD production as a Senior Cad Technician, with a strong focus on highway and Bridge design projects while also supporting cross-departmental needs.
  • Provide technical oversight and mentorship to CAD staff across multiple disciplines and office locations.
  • Plan and conduct training sessions to develop and maintain staff proficiency in current CAD software and workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and design staff to prepare and review engineering contract drawings.
  • Draft and develop drawings and plans from markups, sketches, detailed drawings, and verbal direction.
  • Revise and update existing engineering drawings as needed.
  • Use CAD software to determine and calculate quantities.
  • Understand and apply client CAD standards and requirements consistently.
  • Manage CAD file organization and interrelationships, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
  • Communicate effectively across departments and offices to align project goals and support production.
  • Troubleshoot CAD issues and support staff in resolving software challenges.
  • Occasionally travel between office locations to support project needs and team development.

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Associate degree (2-year) in Drafting/Design, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Expert understanding of MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer software.
  • Minimum of 8 to 10 years of Bentley MicroStation and Autodesk AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience, with a strong emphasis on highway design along with an intermediate level of understanding of bridge design, survey ROW and hydrographic knowledge.
  • Familiarity with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and/or New York State Thruway Authority CAD standards is preferred. Experience working with another state’s DOT will be considered.
  • Experience managing or mentoring CAD technicians or drafters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (TEAMS, Word, and Excel).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a challenging environment.
